Basketball CALLS for beginners

Beginner basketball players must be aware of calls referees may make! If you do these things, you will lose possession of the ball - which would be very unfortunate! Read below for some basketball calls you need to know.

1. Travel
  • A travel is when a player takes more than two steps without dribbling.
  • Tip #1: When beginning basketball, make sure to dribble if you want to move on the court!

2. Double-dribble
  • Double-dribbles happen if a player is dribbling the ball, picks it up with both hands, then dribbles the ball again.
  • Tip #2: Once you pick up the ball, that is it! You cannot dribble again. After picking the ball up, make sure to pass or shoot (don't dribble again!)

3. Personal Fouls
  • Fouls in basketball lead to the other team gaining possession of the ball (sometimes free throws.) Typically, a a personal foul is physical and involves grabbing, pulling, or tripping a player.
  • Tip #3: When playing defense, make sure your hands are open and palms can be seen. If your hands are closed, the referee might see it as you grabbing someones arm/jersey.

I know all these rules can feel overwhelming. I'd like to assure you... once you know the rules, the sport is more easier to understand! Hope this helps a ton.

Take care of business and take care of yourself!

Sincerely,
Mary Pacio
